18 reasons to be with us again this summer

For the regular guests of Kastav, this is but a reminder, for our new guests an authentic invitation:

18 reasons to be with us again this summer

Symbolism bearing the number 18 was present throughout the programme selected for this year’s edition of the international summer festival Kastav Summer of Culture. The 18th edition of the festival successfully closed on 28 August.

This year, Sergej Bulić, creator of the festival’s visual identity, applied metaphors to the festival’s 18th birthday and its coming of age, and again thrilled the public with his play on words punoljetno (in Croatian, this means “of legal age”, but it is a play on words, as “puno” means “many” and “ljeto” means summer or year, so turning 18 or being of legal age also relates to having “many summers”).

These were many summers of high quality artistic, dramatic and musical programmes, reflecting the maturity, responsibility and fullness of artistic expression, suited to its coming of age.

The programme was presented to the public in early May, when jumbo posters and other posters were installed. Flyers and a bilingual (Croatian/English) programme booklet were handed out. The programme booklet provided complete information on the artists, programme, productions included in the three separate entities of the Art Programme, International Guitar Festival and Music and Drama Programme within the 18th Kastav Summer of Culture, and was enriched with photographers of the performers. The programme booklet also presented this year’s sponsors and patrons.

The programme was also made available on the festival website www.kkl.hr, which provided all the information given in the booklet. The website was further enriched with news about this year’s novelties, and videoclips presenting individual programmes.

The website was highly visited, and the videoclips made by Riffmarketing d.o.o. were frequently watched. This later positively reflected on the Internet ticket sales. The already reasonably priced tickets came with a bonus – discounted early sales. This, together with the attractive programme ensured excellent ticket sales and, ultimately, good financial results.

Media interest for the festival was great. Croatian Television (HRT) reported on the festival, not only in its segments News from Culture, but also in specialized shows such as Kratki susreti (Short meetings) and More (Sea), and the programme was announced on the early morning television show Dobro jutro, Hrvatska (Good Morning, Croatia) in early June.

In addition to our media sponsors Novi list, Kanal R, R-1 network, La Voce, Radio Istra and Turist plus, the programme of the Kastav Summer of Culture was also announced, reported on and reviewed by Jutarnji List, Večernji list, Glas Istra, Hrvatsko slovo, HR Radio Rijeci and Puli, Croatian Radio channels 1, 2 and 3, Narodni Radio, Croatian Catholic Radio, Radio Porto Re, and the Istria Radio network. The website also received an exceptional number of visits.

In order to keep our coverage up-to-the-minute, photographs of the event with short comments were posted right after the event’s completion, and are still available on the website www.kkl.hr.

With all the luck we had with the weather, we were not lucky all round. The show Turbo-folk by O. Frljić, from the Zajc Off series of the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc from Rijeka, scheduled for 13 July was cancelled due to an injury sustained by actress Anastazija Balaž Lečić. As the play could not be rescheduled to another time, the sold out show was cancelled, and a large audience was left without this exceptional dramatic experience.

The play by Yasmina Reza God of Carnage by the Rugatino Theatre from Zagreb (7 July) and the musical programme entitled A Tear for the Zagorje Hills performed by the Gubec Quartet and Fakini tamburitza ensemble (4 August) had to be held indoors, in the Braće Matešić Social Centre. However, this did not in any way affect the excellent atmosphere and excellent reception by the audience.

The Kastav Summer of Culture would like to thank everyone who in any way contributed to the organisation and realisation of the 18th summer festival. Until we meet again at the 19th Kastav Summer of Culture in 2010 in Kastav, we wish you much artistic inspiration and good vibrations!

Holy Trinity Chapel Gallery was included on the list of official galleries in the Republic of Croatia

The small Holy Trinity Chapel on Lokvina Square in Kastav dates back to the 15th century and is a cultural monument. The interior, comprised of a sanctuary of frescoes with old Glagolitic writing, has proven to be an astonishing inspiration and demanding exhibit space for modern artists of all trades. That is the reason why this gallery is a great challenge as an exhibit space for most of today’s artists. The chapel’s gallery has been used as a gallery space for more than a decade (since 1995), and has profiled itself for exhibits since 2005 with its program of selected authors and professional curators. Most exhibition programs take place during the Kastav Cultural Summer manifestation (from June to the end of August), and covers all dates which are important for the city of Kastav: St. Helena and Kastav Town Day. The exhibit space is equipped with standard gallery equipment and reflectors, as well as technical staff and security services, and working hours during exhibits is daily from 10 a.m. to noon and 6 to 9 p.m.
From 2008, the Holy Trinity Chapel Gallery was included on the list of official galleries in the Republic of Croatia. Its program proceeds under the organization of the Kastav Cultural Summer Association. The activities and program is financed by the Town of Kastav, while co-financing is provided by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and
Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Part of the exhibition program is financially assisted by the Kastav Tourist Board.
